OMFGDKP

We use DKP in Smells Like Victory for awarding loot in 25-man raids. Karazhan is a 10-man raid that the whole guild can't participate in at once, and as such, its loot is /randomed off.

SLV's DKP is an auction-style system. We kill a boss. Loot drops. If you're interested in the loot, you check your points and then whisper a bid to the person handling loot. After a few moments, the DKP person (usually Insanelogic) will count down in Vent while waiting for last minute bids, then announce the winning bid and award the loot. Once you loot, you are charged the amount you bid, and while our mod software doesn't update point totals on the fly anymore, please be considerate and don't try to pull a fast one. We're all grownups here, and are all working towards the shared goal of wtfpwning raid content.

We get points for killing bosses, but those points aren't awarded until after the raid. We also use rank to determine loot priority - raiders get loot priority over recruits!

We don't restrict loot to classes, but instead keep a careful eye on what people are bidding on and will adjust the roster accordingly in the future. Again, the shorthand here is "don't be a dick." They're your points. You can do what you want with them. If you're a warlock and drop a bunch of points on the first dropping of [leet rogue dagger of omgwtfpwnage], we'll let you take it if you really want it, but your chances of raiding with us again will go down dramatically. This will relax after we've seen that loot a few times, though. Our shadowpriest has a Nelth's Tear, but he got the 5th or 6th one that dropped (and still paid a lot for it!)

A corollary that you'll often hear to this is "bid it like you mean it." Since we don't fix prices on loot, the first few drops of a particular loot will be very expensive compared to later drops. We feel this is a nice way for the DKP economy to balance and reweight itself on the fly. If you want an item, make a decent bid! If you're the only dagger rogue in the raid and [leet rogue dagger of omgwtfpwnage] drops and you get outbid by a hunter because you only bid 40 points thinking it would be defaulted you, then you will be told to go /emoQQ in the corner if you complain about it.

Some commands:
The DKP software runs as a chatbot on the loot person's toon, so you just whisper them commands and it gives you teh infos.

/w Insanelogic rp help
will give you a list of commands for the raidpoints bot

/w Insanelogic rp
will give you your points

/w Insanelogic rp top
will give you a list of everyone's current points, ranked in order. If someone has just looted in the raid we're currently running, their points will NOT be updated (but they will obviously not be able to spend points twice.) Sorry kids...free software isn't perfect!

/w Insanelogic rp top class
will give you a list of that particular class's point rankings.

There is also a web interface for checking people's points and loot history on our site. Go poke around:
http://www.smellslikevictory.net/SMF/index.php?page=31 (It's also on the website's left buttonbar.)

Also, if you're on the bench/waitlist, you earn DKP as though you were in the raid!
